Semecon Oy promotes Finnish renewable energy production by planning and developing wind and solar power parks.

Semecon Oy, founded in 2018, is a 100% Finnish limited company. We promote domestic renewable energy production by planning and developing wind and solar power parks, particularly in the Northern Ostrobothnia region. We collaborate with the international renewable energy investment company Korkia.

Our goal is to help build a more self-sufficient future for Finland’s energy sector. During the development, construction, and operation phases of wind and solar power parks, a high degree of domestic and especially local involvement is key to our operations. We strive to utilize the land areas for our projects in a way that respects people, the environment, and nature.

Renewable energy from wind and sun

Wind and sun are inexhaustible natural resources that provide a clean way to produce energy: they are renewable, fuel-free, and do not produce emissions into the environment. The most important way to combat climate change is to make energy production carbon dioxide-free. Wind power technology has significantly advanced in recent years, enabling better production efficiency for wind farms. Wind turbines are now the most cost-effective way to produce electricity. The technical development of solar power plants has also been significant, and implementing solar power plants has proven to be a profitable form of production even in northern regions.

A wind turbine generates as much energy in 5–8 months as it consumes over its entire 30-year lifecycle from production onward.

Finland’s climate is favorable for utilizing wind power. The winter months are much windier than summer, meaning wind power produces the most energy when it is needed most. Conversely, solar power production peaks during the bright periods of spring and summer, making these production methods complementary. By producing energy locally in Finland, we ensure the country’s energy self-sufficiency, reducing our dependence on imported energy.

Impact of wind turbines on the area

Wind and solar power plants bring many benefits to the municipality and its residents through property taxes, job creation in various sectors, and subcontracting networks throughout their entire lifecycle. Additionally, the area’s road infrastructure improves, adding value to landowners and other visitors to the forested areas.

For landowners, wind and solar power bring more revenue than the same area used for forestry. Forestry activities can continue as usual, even with the land being used for energy production. Recreational activities and everyman’s rights in the area remain unchanged.

The changes to the area and the environment caused by wind and solar power plants are carefully studied through meticulous planning and various impact assessments. The final location of the parks is determined based on the suitability and conditions of the area.
